AI Labeled Its Trump Xi Musk Bezos Dinner Photo And America Shared It Anyway

A digitally generated image depicting President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos seated at the head table of a White House state dinner circulated widely across social media platforms beginning September 24, 2026, accumulating millions of shares before multiple fact-checking organizations confirmed what the image itself had already announced in its own metadata, watermark, and a small but entirely legible disclaimer printed across the lower left corner reading "AI-Generated Image. Not Real."
The disclaimer was in Arial.
Snopes, PolitiFact and the Associated Press each published separate investigations concluding that the photo was not real. All three noted the watermark. Snopes described the font as "clearly visible to anyone who looked at the image rather than the caption about the image."
The fact-check articles were shared approximately 340,000 times combined. The original image was shared 11.2 million times, including by seventeen verified journalists who described it as "troubling" without specifying whether they meant the dinner or the photograph.
Musk addressed the image Tuesday morning in a post that read: "This is obviously fake. We were in separate rooms." The post received 4.1 million likes. A follow-up post clarifying that he meant separate rooms at different events on different continents received 600 likes and a reply from a man in Phoenix who said he "knew it."
Bezos did not comment. A spokesperson for Amazon confirmed that Bezos was not at a state dinner on September 24 and then, after a pause, confirmed he was not at any state dinner this week and then, after a longer pause, asked to go off the record.
The White House confirmed no state dinner occurred on September 24, 2026, and that Xi Jinping has not visited Washington this calendar year. When asked whether such a dinner would hypothetically require a guest list, deputy press secretary Kayla Morris said the administration was "committed to transparency in all matters of diplomatic hospitality" and then ended the briefing.
The image was generated by a user on an AI image platform who told one reporter he made it "to see what would happen." He said he did not expect it to travel this far. He said he thought the label would stop it. He said he has since made fourteen more.
Among those who shared the original photo was Franklin Dreyer, 54, a retired electrical contractor in Knoxville, Tennessee, who said he shared it because it "confirmed what he already knew."
Asked what he already knew, Dreyer said: "That they're all in the same room."
He was shown the watermark. He looked at it for a moment.
"That could be edited in," he said.
Fact-checkers are currently investigating whether the watermark is real.
