Ogunbowale Scores 45 Playoff Points While Her Teammates Watch Politely

DALLAS, TX, The Dallas Wings will play a decisive Game 3 after guard Arike Ogunbowale delivered one of the most historic individual performances in WNBA playoff history Monday night, scoring 45 points in a must-win game and single-handedly preventing her franchise from going on vacation two months early.

Ogunbowale's 45 points saved the Wings' season. Her teammates participated in the game in an official capacity.

Let's be clear about what happened here. One woman, 45 points, an elimination game. That is not a basketball performance. That is an eviction notice that got paid by one roommate while everyone else claimed they were between jobs.

The other players on the Dallas Wings roster were described by sources as, quote, "available" and "in uniform." Several were observed moving in basketball-like directions throughout the evening. One is believed to have scored.

Wings head coach Latricia Trammell told reporters after the game that the team showed "incredible fight and resilience," which is the coaching equivalent of saying the Titanic showed incredible buoyancy for most of the trip.

Ogunbowale herself, when asked about the performance, said she was "just trying to help her team win." Help. She was trying to help. The word she was looking for was "replace."

Sports analysts spent the hours after the game calling it a "statement performance" and a "historic night," which it was, but they kept accidentally implying it was a team effort, which it was only in the sense that nine other people were also paid to be in the building.

Dallas fans celebrated online, with many expressing belief that the Wings are now a serious threat heading into Game 3. These are the same fans who, forty-eight hours ago, were watching their team sleepwalk toward a first-round exit that would have been discussed in hushed, ashamed tones at Thanksgiving.

The Wings are alive because Ogunbowale refused to let them die. The Wings are in Game 3 because she scored 45 points in a playoff elimination game, which is the kind of thing a person does once in a career, and she apparently decided to do it on a Tuesday, for a team that was almost certainly not going to return the favor.

Game 3 is Friday. Ogunbowale is expected to start. So are ten other people, who at this point should really consider sending flowers.

The city of Dallas has a parade planned. Ogunbowale is invited. Her teammates can probably walk behind the float.
