PolitiFact Releases Definitive Trump Fact-Check Guide Using Quotes From 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- PolitiFact, the Pulitzer Prize-winning fact-checking organization, published a comprehensive guide Tuesday to President Donald Trump's midterm rally talking points, describing the project as an ongoing effort to hold power accountable.
The guide covers eleven recurring claims, including assertions about trade deficits, border crossings, stock market performance, NATO contributions, and the size of a crowd at an event that occurred during a different presidency.
The outlet noted that reporters monitor Trump's public remarks every day. An editor familiar with the project said the team had developed what she called "a strong intuition" for when a new claim was coming, which she estimated happened roughly twice per election cycle.
"We treat every rally as if it might contain something we haven't heard," said the editor, who asked not to be named because she was not authorized to discuss the filing system. "Usually around the forty-minute mark, there's a window. We stay ready."
Of the eleven claims catalogued, PolitiFact rated three as False, four as Mostly False, two as Half-True, one as Mostly True, and one as True, which was the claim that he was at the rally.
Sources close to the project said two of the entries had been copied directly from a 2019 guide, which had itself been adapted from a 2017 guide. A researcher described the process as "responsive updating," meaning the dates were changed and the figures were left where they were on the grounds that the figures had also not changed.
Trump, speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania on behalf of a Senate candidate whose name he pronounced correctly on the third attempt, delivered all eleven catalogued claims within the first hour, then added a twelfth about a statistic that PolitiFact confirmed it had not seen before and immediately rated Pants on Fire.
"That's the window," the editor confirmed.
The candidate standing behind Trump during the speech nodded at intervals that political analysts described as "load-bearing" and said nothing for fifty-three minutes, which three separate aides later characterized as a strong performance.
PolitiFact says it will update the guide as the midterm schedule continues. A spokesperson said the organization was also maintaining a secondary document tracking claims it had rated previously but which Trump had stopped making, on the theory that their absence was itself a data point worth preserving.
The document is titled "Retired."
