Alice Weidel is the co-leader of Alternative for Germany, the AfD, which received the largest share of votes in the February 2025 federal election. The party's official positions include the mass deportation of non-ethnic Germans, the rollback of LGBTQ+ protections, and the restoration of what party literature describes as traditional German values. Weidel herself has called same-sex partnerships a deviation from the norm and has argued that Germany's immigration policy represents an existential civilizational threat.
She has been in a relationship with Sarah Bossard, a Sri Lankan-born film producer, since approximately 2011. They live together in Biel am Rhein. They are raising two boys. This has been reported by Der Spiegel, the BBC, Reuters, The Guardian, the Associated Press, and a regional Swiss newspaper whose name translates to something like the Bodensee Herald. The information is in Weidel's Wikipedia entry, which is available in twenty-three languages, including German.
A meme distributed widely on Instagram and X last week announced this information under the heading THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW THIS. The meme featured a photograph of Weidel, a photograph of Bossard, and three exclamation points. It was shared approximately 340,000 times before the weekend.
To establish the timeline of concealment, a review of the public record was conducted. Weidel brought Bossard to the 2017 AfD convention. She mentioned her in a 2019 interview with Bunte, a German celebrity magazine roughly equivalent to People, in the context of describing a happy home life. In 2021, a German documentary crew filmed inside their house. Bossard appeared in the footage standing near a kitchen.
Elon Musk, who appeared via video link at an AfD campaign rally in January 2025 and has described Weidel as representing the only hope for German civilization, was asked about the apparent tension between Weidel's politics and her domestic arrangements in a post-rally interview. He said: "Alice is a very authentic person. Authenticity is the most important thing in politics right now. Germany needs authenticity. That's what the AfD represents and that's what she represents and I think voters can feel that."
The interviewer asked a follow-up question. Musk said: "Authenticity."
A spokesperson for the AfD, reached for comment on the apparent contradiction between the party's stated positions and the living arrangements of its leader, provided a statement noting that Weidel's private life is a private matter and that the AfD remains committed to protecting the German family. The statement did not define which German families qualified. A follow-up inquiry was sent asking for clarification. No response had been received by the time this report was filed, which was several days later.
Among those who shared the meme was a user in Phoenix, Arizona, who wrote: "I did my own research and nobody is talking about this." His account shows he has posted about Weidel's wife on four previous occasions, each time describing the information as newly uncovered. The earliest post is from 2022. The caption on that one also said nobody was talking about it.
Weidel has not commented on the meme. She gave a press conference on Tuesday about German fiscal policy. Bossard attended a film industry event in Zurich the same week and was photographed on arrival. Both photographs appeared in German media. Neither photograph was accompanied by exclamation points.
The meme continues to circulate. As of this writing, the version with the most shares includes a caption that reads: "The mainstream media has been completely silent on this." The caption is positioned directly above a Reuters watermark.
