Trump Orders Russian Diesel After Spending Years Telling Europe Not To
By Mor Michael, . BSN Network. Satire.
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Donald Trump announced Friday that Russia has agreed to supply millions of tons of diesel fuel to the United States and global markets following a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, delivering what the White House described as a landmark energy deal and what most energy economists are describing as a sentence they have to read twice.
The announcement came with no published terms, no Senate review, and no apparent awareness that the United States government spent the better part of three years building a legal architecture specifically designed to prevent this transaction from happening.
Trump addressed the deal from the Oval Office, calling it "one of the great fuel agreements in history, maybe ever," and praising Putin for being "very reasonable, very smart about energy, really knows his diesel." He did not specify which previous fuel agreements he was comparing it to, and no aide moved to clarify.
The European Union, which the United States pressured aggressively between 2022 and 2024 to wean itself off Russian energy at significant economic cost, responded with what diplomatic sources described as "a silence that has its own weather system."
Germany's energy ministry declined to comment. Three Baltic states issued a joint statement consisting entirely of the word "noted."
Senator Tom Cotton, who in 2022 co-sponsored the Ending Russian Oil Imports and Keeping Energy from Rogue States Act, said Friday that the situation was "completely different" and that he would explain how when he had a moment.
The diesel itself is expected to arrive via a shipping route that was technically illegal under U.S. sanctions as of eighteen months ago. A Treasury Department spokesperson confirmed that the relevant sanctions had been "administratively deprioritized," which is the phrase a government uses when it has done something it cannot call a reversal.
Fox News described the deal as Trump "outmaneuvering OPEC." OPEC did not respond, possibly because OPEC was not involved.
On Wall Street, shares of domestic diesel producers fell sharply before recovering slightly after analysts pointed out that nobody had signed anything yet.
A spokesperson for the American Trucking Associations called the announcement "encouraging" and said the group looks forward to "reviewing the specifics," which is trade association for they have no idea what was agreed to on that phone call.
Putin, for his part, issued a statement calling the deal a sign of "pragmatic cooperation between great nations," which is the phrase he uses when something has gone exactly the way he wanted.
Trump is expected to hold a signing ceremony next week. The location has not been confirmed, but sources say it will not be in Brussels.
