Xi Jinping Gets State Dinner, America Gets Press Conference About The Vibes

Donald Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House on Thursday for the first full state visit by a Chinese leader in more than a decade, an elaborate two-day affair featuring a military honor guard, a formal state dinner, and a closing press conference in which the President described the talks as, quote, incredible, just really something special, before declining to specify what had been agreed upon.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the atmosphere in the closed sessions as constructive, a diplomatic term that translates roughly to neither side walked out, which at this particular stage of US-China relations is being treated as a deliverable.
Senator Tammy Duckworth, who sits on the Armed Services Committee, called the summit a missed opportunity on every issue that matters, which the White House communications office quickly characterized as a partisan attack on historic progress.
The state dinner featured Wagyu beef, which Trump described as the best beef probably in history, and a dessert course that a White House aide confirmed was chosen specifically because Xi had mentioned enjoying something similar at a 2019 meeting in Osaka, a detail that represents the summit's most concrete example of listening to your counterpart and acting on what you heard.
Xi returns to Beijing on Friday. The two governments are expected to announce the date of the next summit within ninety days.
