Actress Signs Letter of Intent to Star in Film Called Stink Eye

MADRID, Spain. Spanish actress Ester Expósito, whose performance as a wealthy, glamorous, and consistently terrible person on Netflix's "Elite" made her one of Europe's most recognizable faces, has signed a letter of intent to topline the upcoming feature film "Stink Eye," known in Spanish as "Malmirada," a co-production being developed through the Iberseries Co-Production and Financing Forum.
A letter of intent, for those unfamiliar with the entertainment industry's rich tradition of non-binding enthusiasm, is a document that communicates serious interest without constituting an actual agreement, a commitment, a contract, or really any form of legal obligation whatsoever. It is, essentially, a formal way of saying "probably."
Industry observers noted that Expósito, 24, having spent several seasons of "Elite" weaponizing her facial expressions against the upper-class students of Las Encinas, may indeed possess the necessary skill set for a film whose central dramatic requirement is a withering look.
"She has range," said one unnamed source close to the production, who then paused for a long time and added nothing further.
The film is the feature debut of Colombian director and writer Cristina Sánchez Salamanca, who drew attention in 2022 when her short film "Bebé" screened at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, where industry professionals sat in a dark room and agreed it was very good and then went to a party. Sánchez Salamanca is described in press materials as a bold new voice in Latin American cinema, which is what press materials say about every director who has not yet made a film long enough to have a second act.
The project is currently at the Iberseries Co-Production and Financing Forum, which is where promising projects go to be described as promising. The Forum connects European and Latin American producers with financiers who are very excited about the project and would love to have another call next month.
"Stink Eye" follows, according to early descriptions, themes of gaze, power, and the violence of being looked at, which sounds either like a searing feminist thriller or a feature-length Instagram story, depending on which paragraph of the press release you stop reading.
Representatives for Expósito declined to comment on what specifically attracted her to the role, though analysts point out that the opportunity to be the person giving the stink eye, rather than receiving it, represents a meaningful career pivot from her previous work, in which she primarily received it from other beautiful people in school uniforms.
Sánchez Salamanca, for her part, is understood to be thrilled by the attachment, a word that here means one famous person has agreed on paper to possibly be involved, subject to scheduling, financing, script revisions, recasting, and the general chaos of international co-productions.
Production is expected to begin at some point.
