AG Blanche Confirms No Armed Agents Will Monitor Elections, Armed Agents Will Monitor Elections

Attorney General Todd Blanche went on Fox News Sunday to put a rumor to rest, and the rumor is now significantly less rested.

Blanche told host Shannon Bream that it is "completely false" that "armed federal agents" will be monitoring the midterm elections. He then confirmed that the Department of Justice will be monitoring the midterm elections, as it has monitored every election since the 1960s, and that this is standard, legal, and not the thing people are worried about, which is the thing he just described.

The distinction Blanche appeared to be drawing is that the agents will be present, and federal, and monitoring, but not in a way that should concern anyone, because the word "armed" implies a certain intent that the Department of Justice does not have, or at least has not announced.

Blanche said the monitoring is designed to protect voting rights, which is a goal so universally agreed upon that it has never once required clarification on a Sunday morning news program until now.

"This is something the Department of Justice has done for decades," Blanche said. "This is about making sure every American can exercise their right to vote." He did not address whether the agents would be carrying firearms, because that question was not asked, and Shannon Bream has a schedule.

Sources familiar with DOJ election monitoring protocol confirmed that agents deployed to polling sites are, in fact, armed, because they are federal law enforcement agents, and federal law enforcement agents carry firearms, and that has always been true, and it is not new information, and Blanche knows this.

Voters in several states said they were reassured by the Attorney General's comments, then read them a second time, then were no longer reassured.

A spokesperson for a voting rights organization said the group's concern was never about the monitoring itself, which is legal, but about the optics of uniformed federal personnel near polling stations in an election cycle where the President has suggested the results might need to be verified. The spokesperson said this in a statement that no one on the Sunday show circuit asked about.

Blanche's appearance on Fox News was itself notable, given that Fox News is the network that paid $787 million to settle a defamation suit over false election claims, and that Blanche previously represented Donald Trump in federal cases arising from those same elections, a detail that did not come up during the segment about election integrity.

The Department of Justice did not respond to a request for comment, possibly because the Attorney General had just spent four minutes commenting.
