California Names Highway After Man The Highway Killed

CHOLAME, Calif.: The state of California has officially designated a portion of Highway 46 as the James Dean Memorial Highway, honoring the actor who died on that exact highway in 1955 at the age of 24, after his Porsche 550 Spyder collided with another vehicle at an intersection near Cholame. The dedication ceremony was attended by local officials, Dean fans in period-appropriate jackets, and at least one man who drove the stretch of road every day for thirty years and had no idea it had killed anybody famous.

Governor Gavin Newsom called the renaming 'a deeply fitting tribute to a California original,' which is one way to describe putting a dead man's name on the thing that killed him. The governor did not take questions.

The stretch of highway in question has a speed limit, a centerline, and a history. It does not have a Sig Alert for irony, though Caltrans confirmed it is 'monitoring the situation.'

State Senator Shannon Grove, who co-authored the legislation, said in a prepared statement that James Dean 'embodied the spirit of the open road,' which is technically true if the spirit of the open road includes a fatal single-afternoon relationship with a Ford Tudor sedan. Grove added that the renaming would 'ensure his legacy lives on for generations of Californians,' most of whom will encounter it while doing 85 in the left lane without looking up.

Not everyone is thrilled. Sandra Okonkwo, 44, who commutes through the corridor daily, said she thought the sign was for a new exit. 'I assumed James Dean Boulevard was a development. Like condos. I did not realize they named the actual road after a crash,' she said. 'I feel like that's the kind of thing you'd put in a brochure for a haunted house.'

Caltrans spokesperson Derek Villanueva confirmed that the agency replaced two signs along the corridor and repainted a directional marker, at a combined cost of $14,000. Asked whether the agency had plans to address the intersection's safety record, Villanueva said the department was 'always committed to ongoing infrastructure assessment,' and then provided a PDF that was last updated in 2019.

The intersection near Cholame has seen additional fatal crashes since 1955. The signs are new.

Dean, who starred in 'Rebel Without a Cause,' 'East of Eden,' and 'Giant,' became one of the most enduring symbols of American cool in the mid-twentieth century, largely because he died before he had time to do a fourth film and ruin it. His Porsche was nicknamed 'Little Bastard.' The state of California has not named anything after the car.

A small Dean museum already operates near the site, selling postcards, commemorative pins, and a coffee blend called 'Rebel Roast.' The museum did not receive a state designation. The highway did.

Construction on a different section of Highway 46, seventeen miles east, is currently in its sixth year. That section has no name.
