Discord Upgrades Child Safety By Asking Nicely

Discord, the gaming and community chat platform used by approximately 200 million people, announced this week that it is making age verification "less intrusive" for users who encounter age-restricted content. The new options allow adults to confirm their adulthood by providing a facial estimate scan through a third-party vendor, or, alternatively, by indicating through an unspecified number of button presses that they are, in fact, old enough.
The second option does not require a government ID. It does not require a credit card. It does not require a parent's signature, a utility bill, a notarized statement, or proof of having ever paid a tax. It requires a user to communicate, through the interface, that they are an adult, which is the same verification method used by the jar of peanuts at a Little League concession stand that says "PLEASE DO NOT EAT IF ALLERGIC" and considers its job done.
"We want to make sure Discord is a safe platform while also respecting user privacy," said Discord CEO Jason Citron, in a statement that contains two goals that the new policy has placed in direct physical contact with each other and asked to share a studio apartment. "This new approach gives people more choice."
More choice is technically accurate. Before this update, age verification meant submitting identification. Now it means submitting identification or not doing that. The company has successfully doubled the number of options, which is the kind of achievement that looks better in a press release than it does on a whiteboard.
The third-party facial age estimation tool, offered as the more rigorous of the two options, works by scanning a user's face and guessing how old they are. The vendor behind it estimates ages within a range. The range has not been made publicly specific, but the underlying technology is the same category of software that the photo app on your phone uses to tell you that your grandmother looks "approximately 55 to 70." It does not store the image, which is reassuring, and it does not store any data, which raises the question of what it is doing with the three seconds it just spent looking at your face.
A Discord spokesperson clarified that users who do not want to use either option are free to not access the age-restricted content, which was always an option, and which represents the full circle completed by this announcement.
Parents who had believed the previous system provided a meaningful barrier reacted to the news with the specific exhaustion of people who had been told there was a fence and have now gone to look at the fence.
"I set up the parental controls," said Mark Tilden, 43, of Columbus, Ohio, who has a thirteen-year-old and a Discord account he made to "see what it was." "I thought it meant something. I thought there was like, a process." He paused. "There was a process?"
There was a process. The process has been streamlined.
Inside Discord, the update is understood as a privacy win, because submitting a government ID to a gaming chat platform to prove you are allowed to look at whatever the platform has decided requires verification is, genuinely, a strange thing to ask of people. That part is real. The alternative the company has built in response to that real concern is a system that stops the people who were never going to lie and waves through everyone else with a form that says, essentially, "we trust you," addressed to an anonymous internet user.
The announcement did not include data on how many minors were blocked by the previous system versus how many clicked through it anyway. Discord has not published that figure. The figure would be clarifying.
The platform says the new tools are designed to balance safety with usability. That is also what a revolving door is designed to do, and nobody has ever described a revolving door as a security system.
