Ken Paxton's Comfort To Uvalde Parents Was That God Had Already Booked The Shooting

AUSTIN, Texas. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, currently campaigning for a U.S. Senate seat against Democratic challenger and Texas state Representative James Talarico, is drawing renewed attention to remarks he delivered in May 2022, five days after a gunman killed nineteen children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. In those remarks, Paxton told a podcast audience that God has a plan, and that this plan, properly understood, should provide comfort to the families of the dead.
Paxton has not specified whether he reviewed the plan before commenting on it or is working from a summary.
The remarks are resurfacing now as Paxton asks Texas voters to promote him from the office that enforces state law to the chamber that writes federal law, a career trajectory he has described as public service and which he has not connected, in any public statement, to God's scheduling practices.
"My faith is the foundation of everything I do," Paxton said at a campaign event in Dallas last month, adding that Texas deserves a senator who shares its values. He did not elaborate on which values he had in mind, though a spokesperson confirmed his position on Uvalde remains unchanged.
Paxton's Democratic opponent, James Talarico, a former schoolteacher, has called the original remarks a moral failure. Paxton's campaign responded that Talarico was politicizing a tragedy, which is a charge that requires a certain confidence in where politicization begins.
The podcast on which Paxton delivered his theological analysis has not returned requests for comment, possibly because nobody could find it.
Several voters contacted for this story said they found the remarks troubling. One Uvalde resident, who asked not to be named, said she had a different word for it but would not say the word on the record. A retired pastor in San Antonio said he was broadly familiar with the theological concept of divine providence and that Paxton had, in his view, applied it the way a man applies sunscreen: too late, in the wrong places, and mostly for his own comfort.
Paxton has previously survived a felony securities fraud indictment, an FBI investigation into corruption allegations, and an impeachment by the Texas House of Representatives, all of which were also, presumably, part of the plan.
The Senate primary is scheduled for March. God's office did not respond by press time.
