Rahm Emanuel Promises To Fight For America With The Nine Fingers He Has Left
By Jeff Garstein, . BSN Network. Satire.
Rahm Emanuel, the former mayor of Chicago and former White House chief of staff under Barack Obama, has spent the better part of 2026 doing everything a person does before running for president while carefully avoiding the part where he says he is running for president.
He has given speeches in Iowa. He has done the podcast circuit. He has released carefully worded statements about the future of the Democratic Party that use the word "fight" eleven times without specifying what he plans to do with his hands, one of which is missing a finger.
That last detail is not incidental. Emanuel lost the top portion of his right middle finger as a teenager when he reached into an Arby's meat slicer after a post-prom shift and the machine made a decision the Democratic Party is still processing. He has since described the injury as formative. Multiple profiles have described it as "defining." One donor bundler in Wilmington, Delaware, who asked not to be named, called it "frankly, the most relatable thing about him."
"You want someone who's been tested," said James Carville, appearing on a podcast he clearly did not vet in advance. "Rahm has been tested. By a deli appliance. At seventeen. On prom night. I mean that's a profile in courage right there. That's the American story."
Carville did not elaborate on what policy positions the meat slicer had shaped, but sources close to the Emanuel camp say the finger is "definitely part of the brand going forward" and that a formal announcement could come as early as the first quarter of 2027, pending focus groups in three states and a final decision about whether to lean into the Arby's thing or just let it come up organically, which it always does.
Emanel's political history is, by any measure, substantial. He served in Congress. He ran the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. He was Obama's chief of staff, a job that requires the kind of daily aggression that makes an industrial slicer look cooperative. He was mayor of Chicago for two terms, a period his supporters describe as transformative and his critics describe using words this outlet is not going to print before nine in the morning.
His ambassador posting to Japan, which Biden gave him in 2021, is the part of the resume his team is handling carefully, given that Japan is a country most Democratic primary voters cannot locate on a map and which is not, as yet, a swing state.
"He's ready," said a senior advisor who has known Emanuel since the nineties and still flinches slightly when he gestures. "He's sharp, he's experienced, he knows how Washington works, and he will absolutely tell you that to your face whether you asked or not."
The Democratic Party, which spent the years between 2020 and 2026 engaged in a public argument about its own identity that produced no winner and several podcasts, has received Emanuel's trial balloon with the muted enthusiasm of an organization that has run out of better ideas and knows it.
Polling shows Emanuel at roughly three percent name recognition among Democratic primary voters under forty, a number his team describes as "upside." Polling also shows that when voters are told the candidate once lost a finger in an Arby's meat slicer, favorability rises by four points, which is the only lead he currently holds over anyone.
Arby's has not commented. They have, however, updated their employee safety training three times since 1976, which is the closest anyone is getting to an endorsement.
