Macklemore Removed From Tour For Making People Feel Things Ed Sheeran Had Not Scheduled

Ed Sheeran's Loop tour arrived in Philadelphia on Saturday night missing one opening act, carrying approximately fourteen tons of LED infrastructure, and trailing a week of public statements so carefully worded they appeared to have been written by a mediator who bills by the syllable.
Macklemore, who had been announced as the tour's opening act in March, was removed following comments he made at a separate concert in which he called for a ceasefire in Gaza, expressed solidarity with Palestinian civilians, and did several other things that Ed Sheeran's management apparently classified internally as 'scheduling conflicts.'
The official statement from the Sheeran camp described the split as 'a mutual decision reached with love and respect,' which is the entertainment industry's way of saying one party had no idea it was happening.
Macklemore posted his own statement. It was 847 words long and included a paragraph about 'the responsibility artists carry in silence.' He thanked Ed Sheeran personally, three times, in a row, which is either grace under pressure or the most exhausting breakup note in music history.
Ed Sheeran responded with a statement of his own, noting that he tries to keep his concerts 'a space for everyone' and that he has always believed music should 'bring people together.' He did not specify which people, or together around what, but the sentiment was delivered warmly and followed by a Spotify link.
Justin Bieber, who has known Ed Sheeran since approximately the beginning of time and has collaborated with him on songs that soundtrack the waiting rooms of dental offices worldwide, told an interviewer this week that Ed is 'one of the most genuine people I know,' which is a sentence that contains no information but was nonetheless quoted in eleven separate outlets.
Philadelphia, for its part, arrived prepared for complexity. Fans outside Lincoln Financial Field held signs reading 'We Love Ed' alongside signs reading 'Say His Name,' the 'his' referring to Macklemore, a man who has never played this stadium but was nonetheless given the full martyr treatment in the parking lot.
One attendee, a 34-year-old named Denise who had driven from Delaware in a car with a 'Coexist' bumper sticker, told reporters she came because she had bought the tickets eight months ago and 'didn't know it was going to become a whole thing.' She cried during 'The A Team.' She did not know why.
Inside, Ed Sheeran performed for two hours and forty minutes with the focused, cheerful intensity of a man who has decided that the correct response to geopolitical controversy is a loop pedal. The production itself was, by any honest measure, extraordinary. Sheeran played in the round on a rotating stage surrounded by what appeared to be a fiber-optic recreation of the northern lights, all of it operated by a crew of 200 people whose job it is to make one ginger man with a guitar feel appropriately cosmic. The budget for the lighting rig alone could have funded Macklemore's entire 'Same Love' campaign, which is either ironic or poetic depending on how you feel about infrastructure.
Backstage, according to a source described only as 'adjacent to the touring party,' the mood was 'focused.' The source used the word 'focused' five times in a two-minute conversation, which suggests the actual mood was something considerably less tidy.
Sheeran closed with 'Perfect,' which is a song about romantic love that has been played at so many weddings it has legally become a civil institution. The crowd sang every word. Several people who had been holding protest signs outside were now holding lighters.
The Loop tour continues through the summer. Macklemore is not on it. He is, by most accounts, doing fine. He posted an Instagram story yesterday that was just a picture of the ocean with no caption, which is either a statement or a vacation, and in 2025 there is no longer any reliable way to tell.
