Man Who Outran Missiles On A Motorcycle Cannot Follow A First Down
By Bruno Von Falken, . BSN Network. Satire.
Tom Cruise appeared on The Tonight Show Monday to discuss his attendance at the Kansas City Chiefs season opener, where he sat next to Taylor Swift and received what he described as a personal football tutorial from one of the most famous women alive. "She was schooling me on football," Cruise told Jimmy Fallon. "For real."
This is the same Tom Cruise who, in the last decade alone, has piloted a biplane through a canyon, ridden a motorcycle off a Norwegian cliff, and hung from the exterior of an Airbus A400M at altitude while the ground below him moved at several hundred miles per hour. The NFL, apparently, is where his education stopped.
Cruise also called Swift a "brilliant musician and director," which is generous, accurate, and the exact thing a man says when he has just been corrected about the ineligible receiver rule and would like to move the conversation somewhere more comfortable.
Fallon, who has the instincts of a golden retriever at a birthday party, received this information with the enthusiasm of a man who had just been told the secret to eternal life. He laughed. He nodded. He clapped once. Nobody followed up.
Swift's football credentials, for those keeping score, consist primarily of attending Chiefs games with great visibility and apparent enjoyment, which is more than enough to be considered an authority when your pupil arrived not knowing the difference between a touchdown and a field goal. Sources close to the situation, meaning anyone who watched the segment, noted that Cruise seemed genuinely proud of having learned something, which is either very charming or a devastating portrait of a man who lives inside a controlled environment where nobody corrects him about anything.
This is, to be fair, a structural problem of being Tom Cruise. When you are the producer, the star, and the person who does the stunt, there is no one left to tell you that you are holding the football wrong. Taylor Swift, who has spent two years becoming the de facto commissioner of a sport she did not invent, was apparently the first person in Cruise's immediate vicinity qualified to fill that gap.
The Chiefs won. Cruise watched. Swift explained. Fallon applauded.
Somewhere, a stunt coordinator who once strapped Tom Cruise to a train is watching this interview and feeling, for the first time, slightly better about his career choices.
