Man Wins Murder Trial, Gets Told To Please Remain In Prison Anyway

CHICAGO, IL: Lil Durk, the platinum-selling rapper born Durk Derrick Banks, was acquitted this week on all charges in his federal murder-for-hire trial, a verdict that should have ended with him walking out of a courthouse to a waiting SUV and at minimum one Instagram post with a dove emoji. Instead, the judge looked at the not-guilty verdict, nodded thoughtfully, and explained that there is a second trial, a RICO case, which the defendant will now need to stick around for.
The acquittal on the murder-for-hire charges is real. The celebration is premature. These two facts coexist in the American legal system without any apparent sense of irony.
Lil Durk has been detained since 2023, when federal prosecutors charged him with allegedly orchestrating the attempted murder of rapper Quando Rondo, a case connected to the death of Durk's close associate and fellow Chicago artist King Von, who was killed in 2020. The murder-for-hire jury looked at the government's case and said no. The RICO jury has not yet had the opportunity to weigh in, and until they do, Durk goes back to the room he has been in.
Meghann Cuniff, the independent journalist who first reported the judge's clarification, noted the development with the kind of clinical precision that makes everyone else feel slightly foolish for having assumed winning meant winning.
Sources close to Durk's legal team described the mood in the courtroom as "complicated," which is the word adults use when they mean "we did not fully read the docket."
The federal government, for its part, released a statement praising the ongoing proceedings as "a demonstration of the justice system's commitment to thorough and comprehensive accountability," which is how institutions say "we still have more charges" without technically admitting they lost the first round.
The RICO case, which involves allegations tied to Durk's label Only the Family and broader gang conspiracy claims, is the kind of charge prosecutors file when they want to make sure at least something sticks. RICO was designed in 1970 to dismantle organized crime families. It has since been applied to, among other things, record labels, street organizations, and apparently any situation where the government would prefer the defendant stay in the building a little longer.
Fans online reacted to the acquittal with genuine enthusiasm before the follow-up reporting arrived. Several posts celebrating his freedom had already accumulated thousands of likes by the time the correction circulated. This is what happens when people read headlines and not paragraphs, a habit that has now materially affected the career timeline of a Grammy-nominated artist.
Durk's attorney issued a statement expressing confidence in the upcoming proceedings and describing his client as someone who remains "focused and resilient," which is attorney for "he is fine but also he is still in jail."
When reached for comment, the jail did not respond, as it rarely does, because it does not need to.
