Microsoft Ships Laptop Whose Name Microsoft Word Would Underline In Red
By Jeff Garstein, . BSN Network. Satire.
Microsoft on Tuesday announced the Surace Laptop Ultra, a premium device starting at $1,599 that the company described as "the pinnacle of personal computing" and whose name, by every available measure, is spelled wrong.
The laptop ships with Microsoft 365, which includes Microsoft Word, which includes spell-check, which underlines "Surace" in red within approximately four seconds of typing it into any document on the Surace.
Microsoft has not clarified whether the misspelling is a typo, a branding choice, a legal maneuver to avoid trademark conflicts with its own existing product line, or a test to see how many journalists would simply print it without asking.
All of them printed it without asking.
"The Surace Laptop Ultra represents a new era of intelligent, adaptive, human-centered design," said Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft's Chief Marketing Officer, in a prepared statement that passed through at least fourteen people before publication, none of whom appear to have read the title.
The device features a Snapdragon X Elite processor, a 2K touchscreen display, and a name that a substitution cipher would improve. Microsoft's own autocorrect, when given the word "Surace" in a fresh Word document on the Surace Laptop Ultra, suggests "Surface." The suggestion is correct. The company declined to act on it.
Sources familiar with Microsoft's product naming process, which involves brand consultants, trademark lawyers, and a cross-functional team described internally as the Naming and Identity Council, confirmed that the Surace passed through multiple approval stages before launch. The sources asked not to be named, which, under the circumstances, seems like a reasonable instinct.
Consumer reaction has been swift. Across Reddit, tech forums, and the comment sections of every publication that covered the announcement, users have asked the same question in slightly different words, all of which reduce to: did anyone look at this.
Microsoft's support page for the device currently lists it under both "Surace" and "Surface Laptop Ultra," suggesting that at some point in the process a responsible adult did notice, decided not to make it anyone's problem, and moved on.
The Surace Laptop Ultra is available for pre-order now. Microsoft Word is included. It will tell you how to spell it.
