Pentagon Pays $150 Million For Autonomous Roomba That Can Start A War

The United States Navy has agreed to invest an additional $150 million in Shield AI's X-BAT program, a fully autonomous fighter drone designed to take off and land without a runway, operate without a pilot, and make battlefield decisions without a human being in the loop at any point during the process.

Shield AI announced it would match the Navy's commitment with $150 million of its own, bringing the total investment in a plane that has not yet completed a single flight test to approximately $300 million, which is the kind of number a government contractor says out loud with the same energy a homeowner uses to quote a deck renovation.

"The X-BAT represents a generational leap in autonomous combat capability," said Shield AI CEO Brandon Tseng in a statement that contained no flight data, because there is no flight data. "We are building the aircraft that will define air superiority for the next fifty years." He did not specify which fifty years. He did not have to. The check had already cleared.

The X-BAT is designed to operate without a runway, a feature the Navy describes as a strategic advantage and everyone else would describe as a drone that has eliminated the one part of the airport that tells you whether the plane works.

Runways serve a secondary purpose beyond takeoff and landing, which is that they are very long and very flat and give the aircraft an extended opportunity to indicate that something is wrong before it becomes everyone's problem. The X-BAT has decided this step is optional.

The drone is fully autonomous, meaning it will assess threats, navigate airspace, and execute missions without a human making a single decision in real time. The Navy's position is that this is a feature. The Navy's position on a lot of things has historically aged poorly, but this one comes with matching funds so presumably someone ran the numbers.

Flight testing is expected to begin later this year, which is a phrase that appears in every press release about every defense program and has a statistical relationship with the calendar year that Shield AI's investors are encouraged to research independently.

For context, the F-35 program, which does have a runway requirement, has so far cost the United States approximately $1.7 trillion over its lifetime. The X-BAT's $300 million price tag before a single flight is either an extraordinary bargain or the opening paragraph of a much longer document.

Sources familiar with the program said the drone is expected to operate in contested environments where traditional aircraft would face significant risk, which is military for places where sending a human would be embarrassing if it went wrong. The autonomous system removes the embarrassing part. What remains is a $300 million object making life-and-death decisions in real time with no runway, no pilot, and no flight hours.

Shield AI was founded in 2015 with the stated mission of protecting service members by giving them AI that thinks faster than the enemy. It is now asking the Navy to trust that same AI to think faster than the laws of physics, starting sometime before December.

The drone has not flown. The money is spent. The press release was very confident.
