Trump Announces Iran Will Not Be Bombed Until After Midterms

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Donald Trump announced via social media this week that the United States does not currently plan to attack Iran before November's midterm elections, framing the restraint as the product of what he described as "productive discussions" with the Islamic Republic.

The post did not specify what was discussed, what was produced, or who, exactly, was in the room. It did specify the timeline, which foreign policy analysts noted is not typically how ceasefire windows are communicated to a nation that has been under American sanctions for the better part of three decades.

"He basically live-posted the threat assessment," said one former State Department official who requested anonymity because he still has friends at State. "In my experience, when you tell someone you've decided not to hit them yet, the 'yet' is doing a lot of work."

Iran, for its part, has not publicly responded, which is either diplomacy or the stunned silence of a country that just learned its survival schedule is tied to control of the House.

The announcement arrives during a period of what the administration has called renewed engagement with Tehran, a description that covers a range of activities including backchannel negotiations, continued sanctions enforcement, and at least two sets of contradictory statements about whether a deal is close, far, or the other party's fault to explain.

Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas, who has previously described any agreement with Iran as an act of civilizational surrender, issued a statement calling the pause "strategically sound," which is the kind of sentence that gets written when the call comes from the same party.

Trump, speaking to reporters on the South Lawn before boarding Marine One, elaborated on the announcement by saying it had been "a very beautiful conversation, very productive, these are smart people, they understand what's happening," and then boarded the helicopter.

Political strategists on both sides of the aisle noted that avoiding a military escalation in the weeks before a national election is, in principle, a reasonable choice, and that saying so out loud on social media is, in principle, not how it is done.

"The norm is you just don't do it and everyone pretends the calendar had nothing to do with it," said one Democratic consultant. "He said the quiet part and then also said the loud part."

Iran has not attacked the United States. The United States has not attacked Iran. November is eleven weeks away.

Both sides are reportedly being very productive.
