Democracy Declares Bankruptcy Citing Unpayable Debt To Future Generations

(BSN): Democracy, the embattled participatory governance system that has operated at a loss for several consecutive decades, formally filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on Tuesday, listing liabilities of approximately $34 trillion and total recoverable assets of what court-appointed auditors described as "residual optimism, non-transferable."
The filing marks the most significant restructuring in the history of Western civilization, narrowly edging out the fall of Rome, which was not technically a bankruptcy but which forensic accountants say had very similar energy.
Democracy, founded in 1776 by a group of landowners who wanted to avoid paying taxes while retaining the moral high ground, had been showing signs of financial distress for years. Revenue, historically generated through civic participation and good-faith disagreement, collapsed sometime around 2016 when both were discontinued.
"We want to be clear that this is a reorganization, not a liquidation," said lead restructuring counsel Bradford Ames, reading from a prepared statement outside the courthouse. "Democracy remains a going concern. It just needs to renegotiate its obligations to voters, courts, the press, and the concept of objective reality, which has been a creditor since roughly the Enlightenment."
Objective Reality could not be reached for comment, but sources close to the creditor say it is "furious" and has retained separate counsel.
The bankruptcy examiner's report, filed simultaneously with the petition, makes for difficult reading. Among the liabilities listed: $12 trillion in deferred accountability, $8 trillion in promises made during election years, $6 trillion in gerrymandering-related structural damage, and a $4 trillion line item labeled simply "the Senate" with no further explanation.
On the asset side, auditors identified a 1787 document in moderate condition, 50 state capitols of varying architectural quality, and approximately 240 million registered voters, though examiners noted that the voter asset is "highly illiquid" and "tends to depreciate sharply in non-presidential years."
Former democracy enthusiast Carol Winship, 54, of Akron, Ohio, said she was not surprised by the news.
"I've been watching this company for thirty years," Winship said. "Every four years they come to your door, they tell you this is the most important election of your lifetime, you give them everything you have, and then rates go up and nothing gets built and someone's cousin gets the contract. I should have diversified into Canada."
Canada declined to comment but was seen quietly updating its capacity figures.
Critics of the filing argue that Democracy has nobody to blame but its own management, pointing to decades of leadership that treated the institution as a vehicle for short-term electoral gains rather than a sustainable civic enterprise. Congress, which serves as both Democracy's board of directors and its single largest liability, held a hearing on the bankruptcy Tuesday afternoon that lasted four hours and produced no findings, a result that several members described as "a win."
Representative Dale Coughlin, ranking member of the Subcommittee on Institutional Solvency, told reporters after the hearing that he was confident Democracy could be saved through a combination of deregulation, tax relief, and electing the right people, which he acknowledged was the same plan that had been proposed at every hearing since 1994.
Under the proposed reorganization plan, creditors in the "future generations" class, who collectively hold the largest claim against the estate, would receive no immediate distribution and are asked to remain patient for an unspecified period during which conditions may improve.
Future generations were not available to consent to this arrangement, as they have not been born yet.
The hearing is scheduled to continue in October, assuming there is one.
