Democrat Calls Streamer With 4 Million Followers An Irrelevant Distraction

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the Democratic Party's foremost expert on futile but emotionally satisfying gestures, announced this week that Hasan Piker, the Twitch streamer who commands an audience larger than the viewership of most cable news programs, is an "irrelevant distraction" not worthy of serious attention.
The statement was released, apparently without irony, by a political party currently searching its couch cushions for a coherent message to offer voters.
Piker, who streams to roughly 4 million followers and has spent the last several years telling young men that capitalism is bad while wearing a $300 t-shirt, has drawn criticism from both parties for a range of positions that range from merely provocative to genuinely indefensible. He has praised groups designated as terrorist organizations, described America as deserving of attacks on its soil, and conducted a foreign policy analysis that would get a freshman political science student a very uncomfortable meeting with their advisor.
None of that, according to Raskin, merits engagement. The congressman, who has made a distinguished career out of engaging with things that also did not want to be engaged with, apparently drew the line at a man in a gaming chair.
"We are focused on the real issues facing working Americans," said a Raskin spokesperson, deploying a sentence that has not contained meaning since approximately 2009. "Representative Raskin will not be lending credibility to fringe voices."
The fringe voice in question spent last Tuesday streaming to more concurrent viewers than watched CNN's primetime lineup.
Political strategists, a profession that has been wrong about every major development in American politics for a decade, were divided on the wisdom of the dismissal.
"You can't elevate him by acknowledging him," said one Democratic consultant who asked not to be named, which was easy to arrange because he has not been correct about anything since the 2012 cycle and nobody was going to quote him anyway. "The moment you say his name, you lose."
The theory, refined over years of ignoring things until they became president, holds that if a movement is simply declared irrelevant loudly enough and with sufficient congressional stationery, it will dissolve.
The last several election cycles suggest an alternative hypothesis.
Meanwhile, Piker continued streaming. On Wednesday he spent four hours explaining to a live audience of several hundred thousand people why the Democratic establishment was out of touch with young voters, a charge the Democratic establishment responded to by releasing a statement calling him an irrelevant distraction.
The streamer's actual views remain a Rorschach test for the left. His defenders describe him as a flawed but authentic voice for disaffected young people who feel abandoned by institutional politics. His critics, including a growing number of people who would normally be his allies, describe him as someone who has confused being loud with being right and being popular with being correct, a confusion that, to be fair, he shares with most of Congress.
Both things are almost certainly true and the Democratic Party, committed to its current strategy of addressing neither, appears to have no interest in sorting it out.
Raskin is scheduled to appear Sunday on a political talk show with a median viewer age of 71 to explain why young people feel disconnected from politics.
