Hegseth Bans Beardos, Weirdos And Wimps But Has No Policy On Former Fox Hosts

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Thursday that the United States military would be cutting 20 percent of its generals and admirals, a restructuring he described as necessary to build a leaner, more lethal fighting force, and which he summarized in a speech using the phrase 'no beardos, no weirdos, no wimps' twice, once apparently for emphasis and once apparently because it was still working.

Hegseth delivered the remarks at the Pentagon, where he also dismissed widespread reports of low morale among service members as 'false claims,' a characterization that morale itself declined to comment on.

'We are retaining personnel at record rates,' Hegseth said, which is technically consistent with the situation where a large number of senior people are being involuntarily removed while everyone below them is too afraid to quit.

The full vision, as Hegseth stated it: no fatties, no trannies, no beardos, no weirdos, no wimps, no radicals. Notably absent from the list: no television personalities, no men who spent the Iraq War in Tallahassee, no hosts of programs whose central premise was that the military had already been ruined by the people who actually ran it.

Hegseth, who served as a Fox News host for eleven years, holds the nuclear launch codes and manages a department of 1.3 million active-duty personnel.

Sen. Tom Cotton, reached for comment, called the plan 'exactly the kind of bold leadership our adversaries fear.' Cotton has described himself as someone who never takes a political position lightly, which is consistent with the speed at which he endorsed the man who called his party's presidential nominee a Manchurian candidate in 2016 and was then appointed to run the military by him.

A Pentagon spokesperson confirmed that the 20 percent reduction would focus on 'four-star redundancy' and that the department had 'more generals than combat commands,' a real problem that military reformers have raised seriously for decades and that Hegseth addressed by also saying 'weirdos' into a microphone.

Retired General Mark Milley, who would almost certainly qualify as a weirdo under at least two of Hegseth's stated criteria, was not available for comment because he was not invited.

The policy contains no formal definition of 'beardo,' 'weirdo,' or 'wimp.' Implementation is expected to be flexible.

Recruitment numbers, which were severely below target as recently as 2023, were cited by Hegseth as evidence that the new culture is working. Analysts noted that the military also introduced a $50,000 signing bonus that year, but felt this was probably unrelated.

The announcement comes amid an ongoing war posture toward Iran, broader NATO restructuring, and active negotiations over Ukraine, none of which were addressed in the speech.

The part about beardos ran about four minutes.
