New Chancellor Promises To Double Unicorns As Path To Economic Recovery

COVENTRY, ENGLAND. Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey stood before an audience in Britain's eighth-largest city on Wednesday and delivered an economic address that covered fiscal credibility, regional growth, reduced regulation, and a solemn pledge to double the United Kingdom's unicorn population.
Healey did not elaborate on where the new unicorns would come from. He did not address housing, feeding, or the regulatory framework that would govern their movement across regional borders. These details, sources close to the Treasury confirmed, are still being worked out.
The Chancellor's use of the term refers, technically, to private companies valued at over one billion dollars, a designation borrowed from venture capital circles sometime around 2013 by people who apparently felt that the financial sector had not yet done enough to make itself sound ridiculous.
Britain currently has approximately 170 such firms. Healey wants 340. He said this with a straight face in a city that spent forty years being held up as a symbol of post-industrial decline, and nobody in the room is reported to have laughed.
"This is about unlocking the latent dynamism of the British economy," said a Treasury spokesperson reached by telephone, adding that the Chancellor's framework represents "a forward-looking architecture of productive ambition across the full spectrum of growth-enabling sectors." The spokesperson declined to confirm whether unicorns were a metric or a metaphor, saying only that the question was "not without nuance."
Local resident Gary Fenwick, 54, who attended the speech after seeing a flyer at his gym, said he was broadly supportive. "I didn't totally follow the bond market stuff," Fenwick told reporters afterward, "but doubling the unicorns sounds like progress. We had one near here, I think. Or maybe that was a brewery."
The Coventry location was described by aides as symbolically significant. A city rebuilt after wartime destruction, reimagined multiple times across multiple decades, now asked once again to stand in as the backdrop for someone's announcement about the future. Coventry has not yet commented publicly on how it feels about this arrangement.
Healey also vowed to continue the work of former Chancellor Rachel Reeves in restoring the UK's credibility with international bond markets, a credibility that had, at various recent points, required quite a lot of restoring. He described this as a priority. He described doubling the unicorns as also a priority. He did not rank the priorities.
Analysts noted that the commitment to cutting legislation was the one element of the speech that contained no fantastical creatures and was therefore the hardest to remember.
At press time, the FTSE 100 had moved slightly.
