New Horror Film Asks What Happens If You Just Don't Look At The Monster

LOS ANGELES, CA. A major studio horror production is moving forward with what industry insiders are already calling the most psychologically convenient premise in the history of the genre: a monster that loses its power if you ignore it.
The film, titled 'Ignore It,' is set to follow a suburban family who survives cohabitation with an unnamed supernatural entity by doing what Americans have long done with structural rot, expired refrigerator items, and the emotional needs of their partners. Nothing.
'What we found so compelling,' said a representative for the production in a statement released Tuesday, 'is the universality of the coping mechanism. Audiences will immediately recognize the behavior. They practice it daily.'
The rep declined to elaborate.
Sam Evenson, the YouTube filmmaker whose Grimoire Horror channel has accumulated the kind of following that causes studio executives to google him in a bathroom stall and then pretend they already knew who he was, will write and direct the feature adaptation of his own viral short. Temple Hill Entertainment and Anton, the producers behind 'Smile,' are attached.
Lily Collias will star as the mother, a woman whose commitment to not acknowledging things reaches, according to an early plot summary, 'a kind of spiritual perfection.'
Early test audiences were reportedly divided. Thirty-two percent described the film as 'terrifying.' Forty-one percent said it 'felt like a documentary about my marriage.' The remaining twenty-seven percent said they had not been paying attention and could not comment at this time, which the director described as 'exactly the reaction we were going for.'
Neighbors of the fictional family in the film apparently notice something is wrong fairly early. A character described in the script only as 'the neighbor who brings a casserole' asks the mother directly whether everything is okay at home. The mother says yes and takes the casserole.
The entity is not shown to escalate in response to being ignored. It simply remains. Occupying the corner of the living room. Present at dinner. Visible in the background of family photos that no one prints anymore because everything stays in the cloud where you never have to look at it.
A child psychologist who consulted on the production told BSN she had some notes. She did not share what the notes were.
Industry analysts say the film arrives at a moment when audiences have demonstrated enormous appetite for horror that reflects real domestic experience. 'Smile' was about a curse passed through witnessing trauma and then performing normalcy. 'Hereditary' was about inherited dysfunction. 'Ignore It' is about the creature in the corner that everyone has agreed, without a single conversation, to simply not bring up at Thanksgiving.
'We think it'll do very well in the suburbs,' the production rep said.
Principal photography is scheduled to begin in the fall. The entity has not been cast.
