Wim Wenders Joins Fashion Documentary As The Man Who Agreed To Just Watch

LOS ANGELES, CA: Peter Lindbergh, the German photographer who spent four decades convincing the fashion industry that women were allowed to look like human beings, will be the subject of a new feature documentary called 'Truth:Beauty.' The film is produced by Maja Hoffmann and Human Humans, a production company whose name is either a philosophical statement or a typo that nobody corrected in time.

Wim Wenders, whose 'Wings of Desire' and 'Paris, Texas' established him as one of the great visual imaginations of the twentieth century, has joined the project. His role is executive producer. This is the film industry's formal way of acknowledging that a person's presence lends the project enormous credibility while also ensuring they will not be in the editing suite at eleven on a Tuesday night making everyone miserable.

The film will be directed by Alexandra Matine, a French novelist whose books include 'Scopophilia,' a word that means, in the strictest clinical sense, the erotic pleasure derived from looking at things. It is a choice of subject matter that either prepared her perfectly for a documentary about fashion photography or raises questions that the press release has elected not to address.

Matine is also writing the film, which means she is writing and directing a feature documentary for the first time, about one of the most photographed photographers in history, while the man who directed 'Buena Vista Social Club' stands at the back of the room nodding encouragingly.

Wenders, reached for comment through a spokesperson, said the project represented 'a meeting of truth and beauty in their most essential forms,' a sentence that contains no information but lands with the weight of something carved into a building.

Industry observers noted that the executive producer credit, in this configuration, functions less as a role and more as a spiritual endorsement: Wenders has essentially told the world that he has seen the pitch deck and found it acceptable, which in European art cinema circles carries approximately the same force as a papal blessing, and requires roughly the same level of hands-on involvement.

Maj Hoffmann, the Swiss arts patron who is producing the film, called the collaboration 'a rare alignment of sensibilities.' A Hoffmann spokesperson confirmed that all sensibilities are currently aligned and that no further alignment is anticipated at this time.

Lindbergh himself died in 2019, which means he is unavailable for the interview portion of the documentary and will be represented instead by his photographs, his colleagues, and whatever the French novelist with a book about staring decides to do with two hours of screen time.

Production is expected to begin later this year. Wenders is expected to be supportive from a distance.
