Trump Golf Kiss Photo Fact-Checked, Journalists Still Working On What A Kiss Is

A photograph circulating on social media this week appears to show President Donald Trump kissing a woman on what appears to be a golf course. The woman has been identified as possibly Natalie Harp, a senior aide and former One America News host, or possibly someone else, or possibly a woman, depending on the outlet.
Snopes, PolitiFact and USA Today all published independent investigations into the image. Their combined word count exceeds 2,400 words. Their combined findings: the photo exists, it contains people, and kissing, as a concept, has not been ruled out.
The Snopes report, which ran to 847 words before reaching its verdict, noted that there is no verifiable photographer, no confirmed date, no confirmed location, and no confirmed identity for either subject. It rated the claim that the photo shows a kiss as "Unverified," while rating the claim that the photo shows something as "True."
In the interest of thoroughness, the report also included a two-paragraph explainer on what a golf course is.
PolitiFact assigned the story to two senior correspondents and a researcher. After consulting three media analysts, a digital forensics specialist, and a professor of visual journalism at Northwestern who asked not to be named because he had not looked at the photo, they issued a rating of "Needs Context." The context they required was: what is happening in the photo.
Natalie Harp, reached for comment through the White House communications office, did not confirm or deny that she was in the photograph. A spokesperson said she "may or may not have been in proximity to a golf course at some point," adding that the administration does not comment on images that have not been formally authenticated by a body that authenticates images.
Asked whether such a body exists, the spokesperson said they would look into it and get back.
Mark Zuckerberg posted a statement on Threads saying he was proud of Meta's community notes feature, which had flagged the image with the label: "This photo may contain a person." He described this as "a victory for truth at scale."
The original image appears to have been posted by an account with eleven followers, a profile picture of a sunset, and a bio that reads "retired, love my country, God bless." It has since been shared 340,000 times. The account has not posted again.
Researchers at the Stanford Internet Observatory spent four days reverse image searching the photo and confirmed it had not appeared online before the date it was uploaded. This was presented in their report as a significant finding. The report did not speculate on what it might mean for the photo to have been taken before it was posted.
The USA Today fact-check included a sidebar titled "What We Know" with four bullet points. The bullet points were: the photo is circulating, the photo shows people, kissing is a known human activity, and golf courses exist in the United States and abroad. A fifth bullet point, listed under "What We Don't Know," read simply: "Most of this."
A media critic at The Atlantic published a piece arguing that the fact-checking apparatus had "once again risen admirably to the challenge of confirming the existence of a stimulus." He called it a sign of institutional resilience. He has two Substacks.
Trump, asked about the photo during a brief press availability on the South Lawn, said it was a "beautiful picture" and that whoever took it had "a real eye." He did not confirm or deny that he was in it. He then boarded Marine One.
As of publication, the kiss has not been independently verified. The golf course has not been located. The woman remains possibly Natalie Harp.
The photo has a four-star rating on a Reddit thread titled "rate this alleged kiss" and was described by the top commenter as "solid composition, soft focus, believable shadows."
Snopes has indicated a follow-up report is in progress.
