Zelenskyy Informed Of His Own Ceasefire Via Presidential Tweet Like Everyone Else

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced via social media that Russia and Ukraine had reached an agreement to stop attacking each other's energy infrastructure, citing the arrangement as the reason diesel prices were about to come down. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed, separately, that no such agreement existed.
This is being described in diplomatic circles as "a strong start."
Trump posted that Moscow and Kyiv had both agreed to the halt, framing it as a done deal with the confidence of a man announcing a renovation that the contractor has not been hired for. The post went up before Ukraine had been informed that Ukraine had agreed to anything, which, by most definitions of agreement, is the central step.
Zelenskyy, reading the post from a country that has been having its power grid methodically destroyed since 2022, acknowledged there was "a strong US proposal for a mutual halt to strikes on critical infrastructure." A proposal. The word "proposal" doing the work of an entire foreign policy apparatus in one syllable.
Elon Musk reposted Trump's announcement with the comment "This is huge," which is either geopolitical analysis or autocomplete. It is genuinely difficult to tell at this point.
Trump's framing of the ceasefire as primarily a diesel price issue is the detail that rewards attention. Somewhere between "sovereign nation under sustained aerial bombardment" and "pump prices in swing states," the former got quietly subordinated to the latter. The president did not explain the conversion rate between destroyed Ukrainian substations and cents per gallon, but the confidence with which he stated it suggested the math had been done, at least internally.
A senior administration official described the situation as "momentum toward a framework," which is the diplomatic equivalent of saying the recipe is almost done because you have opened the refrigerator.
Zelenskyy, to his credit, did not say Trump was lying. He said the proposal was "strong." He said discussions were ongoing. He used the word "mutual" four times in three sentences, which in Ukrainian diplomatic speech means approximately what "with all due respect" means in American corporate speech, which is that whatever comes next is not going to be pleasant for someone.
Russia, for its part, struck a Ukrainian energy facility the following morning.
