Britain Concludes Trump Wrecked the Economy, Deploys Andy Burnham

The United Kingdom has completed its formal assessment of who is responsible for its current economic difficulties, arrived at a conclusion, and selected its weapon: Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, population 2.8 million, famous for a hat.
Burnham is set to meet Donald Trump in Washington, a trip that follows sustained internal briefing from government aides who have told journalists, in confidence, that Trump's tariff policy is substantially to blame for the UK's economic predicament. The obvious next step, officials agreed, was to send the man who runs the trams in Salford.
The White House has not confirmed what it expects from the meeting. Sources close to Burnham say he plans to discuss trade, investment, and the Northern Powerhouse, which is a concept that has been described as transformative by every mayor of Manchester since 2014 and has not yet transformed anything in a way that is visible to the human eye.
Trump, for his part, has spent the year applying tariffs to British steel, British cars, and the general idea of British exports, a policy his own administration has described as a necessary correction and everyone else's administration has described as a problem they are currently meeting about. The UK government's official position is that negotiations are ongoing and productive. The unofficial position, per aides, is that the president has materially damaged the British economy and someone should probably say something.
That someone is Burnham.
Asked about the meeting, Burnham told reporters he was looking forward to a frank and constructive dialogue about the economic relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom, and specifically about what that relationship could look like for cities and regions in the north of England. Trump, when asked the same question, does not appear to have been asked the same question.
Elon Musk, who has no formal role in any of this but has been photographed near most of it, posted three words about Manchester last month that his communications team has since described as contextual.
Senior figures in the Labour Party have praised Burnham's initiative while carefully not describing what the initiative is intended to achieve. One MP, speaking anonymously, said that having a direct line to the administration was enormously valuable. Another, also speaking anonymously and apparently in a different meeting, said the visit risked legitimising the very policy it was supposed to challenge. A third said Andy knew what he was doing, which read in print as slightly less confident than intended.
The Treasury declined to comment on whether any specific outcome was expected from the meeting. The Department for Business declined to comment on whether the meeting had been coordinated with central government. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Combined Authority confirmed that the mayor would be travelling to Washington and that the hat would not be accompanying him, which answers a question nobody had asked and raises several others.
Burnham has previously called Trump's tariff regime harmful, short-sighted, and damaging to working people on both sides of the Atlantic, which is the kind of language that tends to go over well in Manchester and arrives in the Oval Office as a compliment.
The meeting is scheduled for next week. Britain is currently pricing in the outcomes.
